Shahina's Tribute to Om Kalsoum
Egyptian singer Om Kalsoum (whose name also translates into English variously as
Om Kolthoum, Oum Kalsoum and Umm Kulthum, to name a few)
is legendary in Middle Eastern culture as the Voice of Egypt and Mother
of All Arabs. She is also rightly recognized in musical circles as one
of the world's great voices of all time, holding her own with history's
great singers of all genres.
Born in the rural village of Tammy al-Zahayrah in 1898, her singing
career spanned more than 50 years. Thirty some years after her death
her work remains widely played on Arabic radio.
In an article for Harvard Magazine, Virginia Danielson, author of The Voice Of Egypt: Umm Kulthum, Arabic
Song And Egyptian Society In The Twentieth Century, wrote, “Imagine a singer with the virtuosity
of Joan Sutherland or Ella Fitzgerald, the public persona of Eleanor
Roosevelt and the audience of Elvis and you have Umm Kulthum, the most
accomplished singer of her century in the Arab world”.
The discs listed below include anthologies of her own recordings from
the early twentieth century intermixed with modern interpretations of
compositions she originally made famous.
