A Belly Dancer Suitable for All Audiences

by Shahina

I apologize for asking this question, but I need to know about the type of costume you would wear. Some are concerned that the performance may be too "adult". I need to reassure them this is an authentic Egyptian dance appropriate for our occasion. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

No problem; this is a common misconception. My dance is for all audiences. My troupe Zephyra has included dancers as young as 14, and I have had students as young as 7. I don't perform (or teach) any "stripper" moves, but subscribe to a style that is both classy and classic; elegant, appropriate and real.

My philosophy with regard to belly dance is that the dancer is one more piece of the orchestra. Her job is to translate the music into a visual language so that a deaf person could watch the dance and know what the music sounds like. It is also about feeling beautiful and confident in whatever body you are in, and letting the music flow through you. It is not about showing off, hustling for tips, or being a sexpot.

I have a variety of costumes, ranging from folk/tribal to cabaret style. None of them are "Frederick's of Hollywood". In fact, my collection of authentic belly dance costumes is quite tame compared to what you can see on MTV or Dancing with Stars! Please refer anyone with concerns to photos on my web site, where they can even see pictures of me belly dancing at age fifteen years.

If they would like to speak with me or with the mothers of some of my students I will be happy to provide references. I hope to hear form you soon!
