Musicality in Belly Danceby ShahinaI just love watching a great orchestral conductor! Several years ago we had the delightful honor of sitting in a private box at Orchestra Hall to hear the Chicago Symphony Orchestra perform Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird under the direction of Russian conductor Valery Gergiev. It was life changing. In that concert the sky opened and I realized on a new level what musicality in dance really means. The conductor embodied the music on every level. He used every part of his body to speak to each and every member of the orchestra at each moment in the music. He was dancing, and it was beautiful! THAT is what bellydance is supposed to be— a visual and interactive embodiment of the music, rather than an “it's all about me” show. Related Links Copyright © 2010 by Shahina All rights reserved. |
